SCIENCE has ‘put to bed’ what the best sex position is for a female orgasm – and you’ll need a pillow.
Ask someone their favourite sex position and it’ll throw up varying answers, from doggy to reverse cowgirl and the wheelbarrow.

But if you want a higher success rate of pleasing your lady, take advice from the scientists.
A pair of researchers from private gynecology clinic New H Medical in New York looked at blood flow in the clitoris both before and after sex for ten minutes.
An ultrasound scanner was used in the research on a volunteer couple.
The pair were described as a ‘healthy medical doctor couple, both 32 years old’.

I’m a therapist – how to have sex in a heatwave, including avoiding missionary
The positions studied were:
- Face-to-face/female on top (cowgirl)
- Sitting/face-to-face (various)
- Face-to-face/male on top with a pillow (missionary)
- Face-to-face/male on top without a pillow (missionary)
- Kneeling/rear entry (doggy)
The authors, led by Dr Kimberley Lovie, who is leading research with clitoral ultrasounds, wrote: “The kneeling/rear entry position produces the least amount of direct clitoral contact.
“[It] resulted in a negligible increase in blood flow compared to the face-to-face positions.”

The sex position with the least amount of fireworks, therefore, was doggy style.
It produced the ‘least amount of direct clitoral contact’ – which may be key for female sexual pleasure.
And the most ‘successful’ position was the good old-fashioned missionary, but with a twist.
When the woman had a pillow under her pelvis, tilting it slightly, her clitoris was most stimulated.
“In addition to increasing the amount of contact and pressure on the clitoris, pillows can increase the depth of penetration,” the authors wrote in their paper, published in the journal Sexologies.
There were some limitations to the study, including that it only involved one female.
Experts believe women all have different pleasure spots based on their own anatomy – so it’s always worth experimenting.
The study didn’t actually study whether the woman reached orgasm, only that there was blood flow to the clirotis.
Stimulation of the clitoris is considered a sure-fire way to reach climax.
The mysterious ‘G spot’ in the vagina is made up of clitoral tissue and there is some evidence the two are connected.

But, due to gaps in research, there is not consistent information about where the G spot is, and whether finding it results in pleasure for all women.
There are many other things at play for female orgasm, for example contractions in the womb, vagina and pelvic floor muscles.
